The Savory Accredited Hubs gathered November 10, 11, 12, for a working meeting at Enonkishu Conservancy and the Mara Training Centre, which is the Savory Hub serving Kenya. This face-to-face meeting time was incredibly valuable and allowed for the hubs leaders to share insights, resources and discuss the future of the Savory Global Network. The topics of the three-day working session covered everything from the network model of the organization, to the launch of the Land to Market Program, to sharing resources and supporting each other in our global mission of restoring grasslands, social fabrics, and biological diversity through Holistic Management.
The gathering was hosted by hub leaders, Lippa and Tarquin Wood at the Kenya Savory Hub, the Mara Training Centre and the Enonkishu Conservancy. The hub is comprised of the conservancy itself, a training centre, a beef farm (Mara Beef), and an investment area of residential properties that were sold to high end Safari clients, who wanted to own a piece of the bush and to build their dream home on the Mara River, while investing in conservation (www.naretoi.com). The Kenya hub worked with the community to consolidate all of their cattle into one herd and began practicing Holistic Planned Grazing on 6,000 acres. They saw the grass cover increase and a dramatic increase in the amount of wildlife on the land. The increase in wildlife density and variety led to more interest from tourists, and so Lippa and Tarquin renovated an old farm cottage to become a little lodge, House in The Wild.
The Savory Hub Gathering included hubs from the USA, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Spain, Pakistan, and Sweden. In between working sessions, the Hub leaders and Savory Institute staff toured Enonkishu Conservancy and Mara Beef, took game drives on the Mara, visited a nearby Masai community village, and enjoyed galvanizing meals together. This year, the hub leaders were also able to participate in an engaging session lead by Allan Savory discussing the root issue of management. The hub gathering brings us all together, from various contexts, languages, cultures, and backgrounds, to collaborate and advance the movement of managing holistically.
The Savory Institute team would like to thank Lippa and Tarquin Wood for their incredible hospitality, and all of the Hub Leaders who made the trek to Kenya. Their participation was invaluable in forming and directing the future of the Savory Global Network.
